How we use AI in Midnight Tarot without collecting your questions

A question you ask a tarot deck can be personal. When we added AI-written readings to Midnight Tarot, the design question was not just how to write a good reading, but where that reading gets written and what has to leave your device for it to happen. The answer is different on Apple Vision Pro and on Alexa.
On Apple Vision Pro: written on the device
On Vision Pro, readings, answers to your questions and Deep Readings are written by Apple Intelligence, which runs on the headset itself. Your questions and the cards you draw are not sent to us or to any server.
The rest of the app follows the same rule. Your journal and settings stay on your Vision Pro. There is no account, no analytics and no tracking. If you lock your journal, the app only learns whether Optic ID succeeded, never any biometric data. If Apple Intelligence is not available, the app shows each card's own meaning instead.
On Alexa: the model only runs when you ask a question
Alexa skills run in the cloud, so on-device writing is not an option. Here the principle is to use a model as little as possible.
- The free features never use AI. Your daily card, the three card spread and the meaning of any card come from meanings we wrote in advance. Automated tests check that no free path can reach the model.
- A model only runs for a question you ask out loud. When a subscriber asks the cards a question, that question and the names of the cards drawn are sent to Anthropic's Claude model, hosted by Amazon Web Services through Amazon Bedrock, to compose the reading. No identifier of any kind goes with it.
The skill does not ask for your name or email, and nothing is sold or shared with advertisers.
Why build it this way
Keeping the free features free of AI keeps them fast and consistent, keeps your questions out of any model unless you choose to ask one, and keeps the cost of running the skill predictable. On Vision Pro, Apple Intelligence lets us offer written readings without your questions leaving the room.
Questions
Does Midnight Tarot send my questions to a server?
On Apple Vision Pro, no: readings are written on the device. On Alexa, only questions you ask for a written reading are sent, with the cards drawn and no identifier, to compose the answer.
Are the readings predictions?
No. Readings are for reflection and entertainment, and are not medical, legal, financial or psychological advice.
